*The night sky is beautiful, as usual, tonight. No cities but Battery means no light pollution. The long twinkling trail above me reminds me of the time I spent out in Oklahoma with a Native American tribe that I can't remember the name of; it was just as pretty out there, and their stories of the constellations were pretty great.*
*After a little while, I slide off the low shingled roof and land nimbly on the sandy concrete. It probably was once a sidewalk, but now it's a fractured mess. Weeds grow through the wide cracks. I pick a few wildflowers as I go inside and place them in the clay vase on the marble counter just inside the door. I pour myself a glass of one of the still intact bottles of wine and sip it as I go around and kick trash under couches.*
*I poke at the paint of my hastily created wooden sign to see if it's dry. When I'm satisfied that it is, I grab a hammer and some nails and post it over the door.*
*"Welcome to the House of Wolves", it reads.*
Home sweet home.

*It's boring here, but at least I have a choice of bedrooms. The Wolves left last week. It was fun to talk to them and hear them jabbering on about Roman gods and goddesses and the mother wolf they named themselves after. At least, it was sort of cool until they had to start repeating myths. It got really boring when I had to tell them the constellation myths.*
*Then, at some point, they left just because I got a radio call from my friend in Battery City. They thought I was leading him right to them or something, and didn't believe me when I told them there was no way in Hell he'd peel himself away from his computer chair to visit a few girls. Females don't entertain him, just like most BLI operatives don't entertain me. But they didn't believe me. Boring.*
*I flop backwards onto the big ornate couch and groan. This is so downright tedious. Everything has been boring since I left Japan. I would go back, but my BLI friend told me that things were fun out here. Maybe I should go farther inland, toward Battery, at some point. It's really bland out here in the outer rings of the habitable California Zones. I mean, I understand that people want to avoid the radiation, but they could also go live in the city if it was that damn bad. I've been to the ghost towns of Beijing and DC. California has it lucky.*
*My train of thought quickly goes off-track and wanders back through my old adventures. That's one way to beat boredom. I absently pour myself some more wine.*

*After one more glass...okay, two and a half more glasses, I am sufficiently drunk to decide that calling some old friends is a good idea. Oddly enough, Shimo from the Alpha camp hangs up on me after two sentences. Rosie from Carbon disconnects once I told her that I've had four and a half glasses of this stuff and she should totally have some. Hopefully, my Battery buddy won't be as stoic. There's probably a fat chance of that.*
*rb* Hey, Zack! This is Starkid Nova Neb Astro Daystar Orion. Or something. Still a mercenarial plastic-faced pill-pusher with an admittedly rockin' record stash in your epic house closet?

*When my radio crackles and out comes a painfully perky voice that keeps slurring, I roll my eyes. Zone Whore keeps calling me at the worst times. I was just about to go to dinner with Taylor from Accounting.*
*rb* Make it quick, thrill-seeker. I have a date.

*rb* Ooh. Cute! I'll try not to keep ya. But I'm bored. *I drag the o out for like 30 seconds.* Entertain me, chess boy.

*rb* Chess boy? I'm more like the knight in shining armor of Battery City, who has saved numerous lives but hides in the shadows so that others can have the credit. I might have also saved a few damsels in distress, too. I haven't noticed.

*rb* God, you're so melodramatic. You would have made a pretty excellent actor. *I lower my voice in an impressive, if I do say so myself, impression of chess boy.* To be...or not to be... *I insert a deep sigh.* That is the question. *My voice goes back to normal.* Come on! Tell me where the fun is! You seriously owe me for the time you forgot to mention that the Cherry Blossom Festival was actually a massive party in one of the cherry groves.

*rb* Oh, as if I could have told you, seeing as I've never been to Japan. I've never acted as a Killjoy, either. And it's not as if they had put something up on the Inner Internet. So, pretty much, you're an idiot for even considering that I knew and didn't tell you out of spite. Besides, there was a huge bust on the last day, and about 40 percent of the partygoers got taken in. You'd be stuck as...what's your alias that sounds normal until you think about it?

*rb* It's either Cassiopeia Orion or Andromeda Argo. I alternate between them so I don't have too much of a record. You should try it some time. I mean, "the Omniscient" has a much cooler ring than "the Oracle" and it is also tons more accurate. You don't see the future.

*rb* I don't know everything, either, Cassiomeda. Just the things that I can see with my camera. Ooh, speaking of which.... *I don't usually look over the cameras that aren't in Battery City, but with someone mumbling about a town in Zone Three, I just need to take a look. What I see is shocking, to say the least: there is a large pile of bodies in the middle of town, and I can see more bodies with other cameras. There are normal old Battery City operatives near some and Killjoys around others.* It looks like there's something big happening in Zone Three right now. I can send you the coordinates if you'll keep me updated.

*rb* Big is definitely fun. Send the coordinates to that thing on my bike. You know, it's the smiley one that I always forget the name of that sends my places. I need to get my helmet! Big things are going down, Pawn King, big things! *end rb*
*I sprint as fast as I can up two flights of stairs. At least, I think that's where my helmet is; it turns out that I left it on the couch in the basement, where I had apparently left it when Lupa and I got completely wasted last Saturday. Or was it a Sunday? Either way, I've gathered a few other articles of spare clothing during my search, so I go outside and stuff everything in my seat compartment thing. I can't really put my wine in there, as it doesn't fit, so I wrap it in a jacket and tie it to the front of my motorcycle. Chess boy sent the coordinates to my round smiley direction-giver device, so I tell it to direct me there and slam on the throttle so hard that the force of the jolt almost throws me off. I realize now that piloting this thing while I'm full of wine might not be the best idea I've had lately, but it sure does sound fun, so I think nothing of it and speed off.*
