I never said you were. *I'm not really paying attention to him any more, focusing entirely on the program. I help the doctors set up the screen on the wall facing the beds. I narrate what we're doing* Now for the first clip. We'll start with something familiar, and the pain will disorient them. *The screen shows a video of killjoys shooting at a patrol of Dracs and killing several. After a couple of seconds, the doctor waiting at the side of each bed injects a small amount of a serum into the killjoy's IV line, and they almost immediately start gasping in pain.*

*One of the doctors waves Trite away, and the clip changes.* This one is standard material. It shows the citizens of the city in daily life. And so the accompanying serum relaxes the patients. *The doctors switch syringes and inject the new serum into the IV. The killjoys calm down, staring dreamily at the screen* The sedation stays in their system the entire time, of course.

Yes. Now we just repeat. You're welcome to go back to your work if you'd like; I'll be checking in here on a regular basis, but I'll keep you updated on their progress. *I sit down in a chair to one side and watch the doctors at work*

*It's been six days since the program was started, and everything's gone fine. Well, there was one point during day three when the doctors administered too much of the pain-inducing serum and one of the patients nearly flatlined, but the situation was remedied and he's doing fine now. The third killjoy recovered from his capture with a mild concussion, and he started his treatment two days after the others.
I walk down the hallway to the room where the first two are installed. They're scheduled to have been taken off sedation at eight this morning, so they should be waking up soon. I like to be with my patients at times like this, so they can wake up to a friendly face. It can be rather disorienting sometimes, and I don't like to see them upset.*

*I walk into the room and sit down between the two hospital beds. Within a few minutes, the patient on the left mumbles something and opens his eyes. I smile at him* Hello. How are you this morning?
I... *He blinks a few times and sits up* Am I in the city?
Yes. You're at Better Living Industries, and the doctors here have been taking very good care of you.
*He looks relieved* Oh, good. Can I stay here?
Of course you can! And so can your two friends. They're here too. And how would you like to work for us once you're feeling up to it? I'm sure I can get you a job here. Maybe even in Scarecrow!
*He smiles* Really? I'd love that, I really would!

*I leave for home that evening in a very good mood. Both patients were eager to sign their contracts when they woke, and the third should be finishing his treatment tomorrow night. It looks like we'll have three more productive employees in training before the week is out!*

*I'm woken in the middle of the night by a call from the intelligence department of SCARECROW. I smile when I hear the news* No, that's fine. Don't bother - I know someone who can handle it. Yes, I'm sure. I'll keep you updated. Thank you so much for calling! Yes. Good night! *I hang up the phone, pick up a portable radio, and send a brief transmission. Then I lie back down and go back to sleep, still smiling*

*I'm standing at the second floor observation window the next day, looking down into the gymnasium where the new recruits are training. My two patients are in different areas, practicing their combat skills with three or four others and doing very well. That's one thing that citizen recruits just don't have - the survival instinct that comes from living in the Zones. They're well on their way to being instated as Draculoids.*

*I’m sitting in my office, after talking to two of my three recent patients. The third should be in any time, and I’m looking forward to hearing from him. I look up when he knocks on the door and crosses the room to sit in front of my desk*
Hello, John! How are you today?
Very good, ma’am, and yourself?
Everything’s lovely, thank you for asking! I hear you’ll be starting work full time tomorrow – do you think you’re ready?
*He smiles* Oh yes, absolutely! I can’t wait to get out there and do real good. Cleaning the Zones, protecting the citizens, all of that!
Wonderful! And what about your fellow Draculoids, what do you think about them?
I enjoy working with them all! There are differences of personality of course, but we all care about the same things and we’re all working towards the same goals, so it’s easy enough to get along with everyone. I know everything will be okay, no matter which patrol I’m assigned to!
I’m glad to hear that! Now, I know this may be a bit uncomfortable for you, but I have an important question I need to ask you as the final step in your treatment. I assure you, there is no wrong answer, and everything you say here is completely confidential. *I pause, watching him closely* When you’re out in the Zones, you’ll encounter so-called killjoys, usually in hostile situations. Do you think you can handle that?
*He looks down at the desk, frowning slightly* Well, I don’t remember much about living in the Zones, but to be completely honest, I don’t know that I could kill them. It’s not because I feel like one of them, because I’m not any more, thanks to you *He glances up at me and smiles quickly* But more because I feel bad for them. I mean, we both know how much better it is when Better Living Industries is in control, but they’re so… confused, I guess, or, um…
Ignorant? *I suggest*
Yeah, ignorant, that’s a good word for it. So I feel like I should bring them back to the city, and then they can get treatment, and then they can be happy here too. But to kill them…
*I smile reassuringly* That’s very noble of you, John. And whenever possible, you will indeed be bringing them here. We want everyone to be productive citizens, after all. But remember, our doors are always open. We’re perfectly willing to help anyone who comes to us, and most of the people out in the Zones are there of their own free will. And unfortunately, what it comes down to is that if they won’t let us help them then we can’t let them wander around the Zones as they wish. It’s simply too dangerous for the civilian population. It’s better to exterminate them quickly and humanely. Do you understand?
*He sits up straighter in his chair* Yes, I do. Thank you very much, that helps a lot. Because it’s true, you know, we can’t let them endanger others. And if I have to kill any of them it’s really their fault, because they refused to be helped.
Exactly. *I smile at him* Well, it’s been very good talking to you, and I look forward to hearing about all the good things you accomplish in your new job. Stay in touch, and have a better day!
*He stands up, happy again* You too, ma’am, you too! *and leaves the room*

*I sit at my desk, buried in paperwork. Approval forms to sign off on, patient reports to read, employee information to be filed... I sigh and push my glasses back up. I sign on a dotted line and reach for another paper. This one's a report of a helicopter that was checked out two days ago for a routine pickup and hasn't come back yet. The unit can't be contacted, either. No signal from the internal damage monitors, though. I turn to my computer, type in the required passwords and search information, and pull up a tracking page within a few minutes. I frown when I see the helicopter's flight path - it appears to be making a wide circle above Zones 3 through 6. No doubt the g.p.s. stopped working when the radios did, and they're too thick to use a map. I write instructions on a new sheet of paper, requesting that a van be sent out to wave down the helicopter and point them back towards the city. After a moment's thought I add a suggestion that extra training time be devoted to piloting aircraft and navigation, then staple the page to the first and put it in my Out box.*
