*I join Red in the front room, sitting down cross legged next to her and handing her a spoon so she can split the can of chili with me. She looks equally curious and unsure about the new killjoy, and I know she was listening to everything Fail had said* I know what you're thinking, *I say, when Red starts to pull out her notebook* And yeah, we're not in the best position right now, and no, it's probably not safe to let Fail stay with us, especially with our numbers. But we didn't turn Electric away either, and she doesn't seem to be a threat.
*Red just looks back towards the kitchen, and I change the subject* How's your training with Max coming? *That distracts her well enough, and we're still talking - or at least, I'm talking and she's writing - after the chili can's empty and people have started to return to their earlier activities*

*I laugh at what Gear just said. THAT's flattering, but I don't know how to giggle like a schoolgirl. I know how to chuckle lika pig, though.*
Aw, well, I was first in my technology class in middle school, and it finally helped me. Yessss.
*I clench my fist in sign of victory.*
Well, if I get to squatt with you long enough to get him confident, maybe I will get to be of an utility. Okay, so no wall, don't fall. I think I get it.
* I smirk and look at them. They seem to trust me, even if it's just a bit. Well, they look more confident, their smiles are less tensed. I look on the radio and turn the button. The radio scratches and bits of music get out. I suddenly recognize a melody and rewind the button.*
"//...red alert is the color of panic...vated to the point of static...//"
*I opened my mouth wide in awe, alone in the kitchen, and put the radio against my ear. Green Day's American Eulogy. How long it's been I haven't heard the fuckers play a song? Maybe the last time was before the Helium Wars. I smile largly. It's almost a prediction OF what happened in the Helium Wars. I look at Red and Arson sitting in the other room. Red seems still reluctant, but well, I'm not going to bother anyways. It's normal to worry after a retarded girl screamed, verbally fought lamentably with your friends, then drank your water, ate your food and started to fiddle with a radio. I suddenly felt ashamed ; there was a reason to be it anyways. I straped the opened radio to my pants, took the component box and the crushed piece of metal, and grabbed my thermos, still mouthing the words to the song.*
"//There's a disturbance on the ocean side, they tapped into the reserve. The static response is so unclear now. Mayday this is not a test, as the neighborhood burns, America is fallin'. //"
*I walk down the stairs to the well and place my thermos under the water to fill it. The music resounds in the empty basement.*
"//...the last of the rebels...gonna light a fire into the underground, well...//
*I just sit there, listening to the music. I'm not going to try to call Paint. There would be a risk for it to deliver the position of the safehouse.*

*I leave the area when the killjoy's let into the house, and start circling through the surrounding streets. At the western edge of town I stop for a few long minutes, staring out across the desert towards the city, well out of sight. I lean against a rusted stop sign, thinking of nothing in particular. I've gotten better at that lately, remembering my old habits. At least, when I'm not around Red.*
*When there's motion on the horizon I almost don't notice it, what with the constant heat waves making the earth shimmer and wave. Then I see the glint of sunlight off metal, and straighten up immediately. The vehicles, whoever or whatever they are, are too far away to count or identify. I don't want to lose time by waiting to see more detail, and I turn and start running, barely noticing the heat as I ignore the shadows for the expediency of the open roads. Less than three minutes later I slide to a stop in front of the house, seeing the purple haired killjoy with the swords out front, along with the one with goggles. Gear, I think. I'm not out of breath, but I don't waste words* At least one vehicle, coming from the inner Zones. Possibly killjoy. I don't think so.

*I'm pulled away from my glove as I see Max running down the road towards Gear and me. But my stomach drops when he speaks. I wasn't expecting the first words he'd ever speak to me be those ones. I take one look at Gear, noticing the panic in his face before I take action.*
Get the van ready! I'll get the others!

Right. Tell Arson to grab my stuff, will you? *I sprint to the van, pulling the driver's side door open and getting in. Finding the keys is another matter, though, and I quickly get frustrated as I rifle through the glove compartment, the mess on the dashboard, and under the seats* Where the hell did Jump put the keys? Do I really have to hotwire our own van?
*I draw in a quick breath when I glance up, the street stretching out many blocks in front of me, and see a pair of white cars pull into sight. They're not moving too fast, which suggests they don't know exactly where the safehouse is, but they're way too close for comfort and there's no way they won't see the van* Shit shit shit...

*I run into the house, surprising Arson and Red in the middle of their conversation.* Cars on the inbound. Possible patrol. We aren't taking any chances. Grab Gear's stuff as well. *I run past before I even catch their reactions, before slamming my hand on Poison's and Sarah's shut door.* Poison, Sarah, we need to go. Possible patrol on the way.
*I run into the kitchen, only to see that Fail isn't there anymore.* Has anyone seen Fail?

*I hear people hurrying upstairs, and the voice of Electric calling my name. I turned off the radio, hooked it back on my belt, checked the strap of my bag, and jumped on my feet. I ran up the stairs and pushed the door open. The killjoys are running around packing up.*
What's going on?!
*I glance at the door and see Gear hopping in the van I saw when I arrived. I vaguely undrstood what was happening. We had to evacuate. I ran to the kitchen, grabbed the bag of food and water, and ran past Electric, to the van. It's weird, in super-panic situations it's like I turn into Super-Me. I threw the bag inthe back seats and almost screamed at Gear*
Need help?!
*I still didn't know what the hell was going on. But my brain won't care.*

*as I hear the shouts, I understand that there's something wrong, so I grab my raygun, my jacket and my radio and move down quickly and I look out of the window to find those cars, so I start gathering as much things as I can* come on guys! Time to go!! *I hurry up to the van and put the things in it and get back to the house to bring more stuff and so on*

*My nerves calm a bit as I see Fail run past me and out the door with her things. But that still doesn't help that suspicious cars were heading our way.*
PB, Jump, let me know if you need help getting your things in the van. I'm going to get my bike ready to go.
*I make a quick stop to the room I was using to grab my backpack before running over to my bike, which was leaning up against the house. I quickly tie down my bag and my katanas on the back seat. Looking up, the white cars are really close now that I can faintly make out the Better Living logo on them.*
Where is everybody?

*I jump to my feet without asking for details, and run upstairs to grab Gear's backpack. Back downstairs I see PB and Jump collecting the last of the supplies from the kitchen, so I meet Red in the doorway of the front room and start out to the van with her. Gear shouts something about keys and Jump shoves his armful of bags towards me; I let go of Red's hand to take them and Jump pats down his pockets and finally finds the van keys.*
Don't worry about it, let's go! *I say over Jump's apologies, tossing the bags into the back and waving at Red to get in the van.* Wait - where're Poison and Sarah?

*The group is taking too long, and by the time most of them are outside, the patrol cars are close enough that the dracs would have to be blind to not realize they're killjoys. I scowl, weighing my options, then briefly holster my gun and pull my mask out of my back pocket. Red catches my eye as she looks out from inside the van, but there's no simple way to mime what I'm doing, so I just give her a slight nod before moving around the house and out of sight. I break into a run, pulling the mask down over my head. The plastic is cool on my skin, and I immediately feel stronger, more in control. I draw my gun, slowing to a stop as I circle back around to the street. I'm even with the cars now, as they slam on the brakes. The patrols are quick to get out, with each driver staying in his or her seat and the rest either using their open doors as cover, or running to the sides of the road and finding protection there. I'm guessing they'll start trying to circle around soon; they're much less than half a block from the van, and two are actively targeting the front wheels*
*When one man nears the gap where I'm standing, I fire once. The laser lands cleanly on the back of his neck, between his collar and the base of his mask, and I catch him as he falls. The shot wasn't fatal, though, and while the killjoys might have left him to recover, I don't hesitate to twist his head to the side and break his neck. I don't want liabilities. I pull him into the alley, shrug into his jacket, and get back into his position as quickly as I can. The red X on my mask will give me away, but I'm not willing to take his and if I'm careful about how I stand the rest of the patrol might not notice in time. Besides, it may lessen the chances of the killjoys aiming for me as well.*

*The house is stirring. People shouting all over the place in a frantic hurry. Sarah and I are collecting our notes as rapidly as we can, trying our best to organize everything in a manner that'll allow for easy recovery. A bli van it sounds like. Everyone trying to get out of here as soon as possible... but what I've just learned from this sphere... maybe I shouldn't leave so quickly. These are probably drones who are on patrol so I better not risk them wanting to chat.*

*Just as Jump throws the keys through the open window, the first laser sparks across the windshield, melting a divot in the glass. I start the van up, knowing not everyone was inside but wanting to at least put some distance between us before they manage to blow out our tires. I jerk the gearshift into reverse and hit the gas - after confirming that no one's right behind us - and bump up over the curb and around the corner of the porch. I don't like the position it puts us in, but it shields the tires and gives the others a chance to catch up*
*My window's already rolled down, and I lean out to shoot towards the dracs. My aim's not great from this far away, but I know I should stay behind the wheel* Come on, guys, we've gotta go! *Someone taps my shoulder and I turn to see Red, holding out her hand. It's the first time she's initiated contact with me, I think, and I'm betting it's only because there's no one else in the van, but it's obvious what she wants. After a moment's hesitation, I open the glove compartment and pull out the extra ray gun we'd brought with us from the theater*
Just... don't mess up, all right? *I know it sounds a bit harsh, but I don't really want to give it to her in the first place, and one of the dracs just managed to hit the door on my side of the van*

*When Red's in the van I run back to the house, ducking low as I cross the open space to the porch. Down the hall I find Poison and Sarah's door still closed; I pound on it once and then push it open, seeing the pair gathering up their things* Tell me what to do to help - we need to leave ten minutes ago.

*I quickly avoid the sparks that hit the van's windshield as I maneuver my bike so it's ready to go once I start it up. Seeing Gear position the van right up against the porch, it blocks my bike, which I'm thankful for. But seeing the Dracs get close, I know we need to buy ourselves some time while Arson grabs Poison and Sarah.*
*I take up position right over the hood of the van, using it as cover as I try to shoot the approaching Dracs. I catch Gear's eye, giving him a nod as I start to unleash a barrage on lasers. But I know if we don't leave soon, we're not going to make it out without casualties.*
