*working from the stage, i find the black sphere again. Made of some sort of metal, not aluminum, too heavy for that, but also too light to be a bomb or anything of danger... its more likely data than anything* *I take my bowl to the kitchen and then return to the stage, walking more smoothly now that I've loosened up a bit. I sit down next to Poison, intrigued by all the parts he has scattered around him* You found all this at the food warehouse?

*I look up at Arson, wondering why she's willing to put up with me, why she's so helpful. My urge to sleep gets the best of me and I bundle down into the covers, scooting closer to Arson for warmth. I don't think I'll really get to sleep, but before I know it I'm drifting off into the black, my sore and healing body forgotten. Everything's fine, if only for a few hours...*

*I lean my head against the wall, letting my mind wander. I think about our good luck at the warehouse, and whether Poison will be able to make anything useful with the things he scavenged, and how horrible it is that killjoys would have tried to do harm to someone like Red. I wonder what the drac at the side of the road would be like without his mask on, and what our lives would have been like if there had been no such thing as the Helium Wars, and we weren't divided into City and Desert. After a while I realize I'm starting to drift off, so I carefully disentangle one corner of Red's blanket and take one of her hands so I'll wake up if she gets restless. Still leaning against the wall, I close my eyes and let myself fall asleep.*

*Gear startles me and nearly causes me to drop the black sphere, but I just barely keep hold of it*
Oh hey gear. haha. Scared me a bit. Um, yeah. sorta. There was this rubbish and waste bin with all these things inside... well it was locked heavier than the other bins with food but I managed to hack and pick my way in. Take a look at what we got! haha
*puts down the sphere and spreads out the scavenged stuff more evenly*

*Jump joins me as I am cleaning up in the kitchen and organizing the cans in convenient to-go boxes, since we'll be moving again soon. He tells me about what happened to Red and how Gear saved her, but is currently mad at her. Jump shakes his head and asks why everyone can't just get along. I shrug* They're both right, Jump, from their own perspective. Gear is a city kid who has been out long enough to figure out how much of the zone works. Red's a BLI product with practically no clue as to what's going on. She's dangerous, but she needs to be protected as well, and Gear almost paid the price for walking that fine line. Maybe if we sit her down and just explain everything. I always thought that would be interesting, anyway, officially writing down a code...*

*I look out the window, thinking* But wouldn't the rules change after a while, PB? After all, if there's anything we've learned in the zones, it's that nothing is static*
*I grin a little as I realize this gives a new meaning to Dr.D's phrase 'if the static don't get you first' *

So when the time comes, we change it. Simple as that. We can write the rules for the moment, not the future. After all, who knows how far into the future-
*I cut the sentence short, thinking about our brother. Jump looks at me and I know he's thinking it too. I pat him on the back and go back to packing up boxes of food, leaving out a little for dinner tonight. Jump tells me to leave out some powdered milk, for Red*

Some of this is in great condition... *I pick up a piece and turn it over, then set it back down* I'm surprised they tossed it. What's that? *I indicate the sphere, trying to be friendly and keep the conversation going, simultaneously wondering what's taking Arson so long, since Jump's already back out.*

*I start awake when I hear the soft knock on the door. I see Sarah peek around the corner. She's Poison's sister, nice and high energy. I fought with her when we went up against the exterminator. That feels like a lifetime ago. Now that I'm too weak to fight I usually don't know what to do around her. I gently tug Arson's hand, not sure if she's awake or not*

*I wake up when I feel Red pull on my hand, and look over at the door, rubbing my eyes. I wonder how long I was asleep; it doesn't feel like much.* Hey Sarah. What's up?

Counting the dots on the ceiling *looks up at the panels on the ceiling*
1,023... 1,024...
I'm not sure what it is yet. Just a little thing I found, more complex than anything in that bin so i grabbed it. Could be important, useful, possibly dangerous so I'm hesitating doing anything too extravagant on it.

*Sarah confuses me. I know she was experimented on by BLI as well, but for a much shorter time frame. She has some of the same skills, but is more weapon-centric and seems more detached than the other killjoys. Perhaps that is her way of coping... but I'm too tired to think too hard about it right now. I look at Arson, then turn and go back to sleep, exhaustion taking over with someone I trust watching over me*

1025...1026...bother...It will take forever at this rate... *I close my eyes and concentrate for a few seconds before opening them again. Eyes darting to ever panel and corner of the ceiling*
423,873. *I smile and laugh in satisfaction*

Right... *I wait a moment, but it doesn't look like Sarah's about to start a conversation. Red's already breathing evenly again, probably asleep, and I'm not too wide-awake myself* Well if you don't mind... *I nod towards Red, and Sarah follows my gaze, then inclines her head with the odd smile that everything seems to warrant. When she's stepped back into the hall and closed the door behind her I lean back against the wall again. Sarah disconcerts me a bit, though she seems nice enough. I close my eyes, letting the soft motion of Red's breathing lull me back into a doze*

Mhm. *I can't think of anything else to say, so after watching Poison tinker for a few more minutes I excuse myself and get up. I pass Sarah in the hall, and hesitate outside the door. I don't want to interrupt anything, and I end up standing against the wall for a good ten minutes, going back and forth in my head and hoping she'll just come out of her own accord and save me the trouble. Of course, then I'd have to explain what I was doing here, but still.*
*The ten minutes go by without any noise from inside the room, and finally I step forward and open the door, turning the knob as quietly as I can. I'm surprised when I see them both apparently asleep on the bed, Red wrapped up in at least three different blankets and Arson holding her hand, sitting against the wall. I frown, uncomfortable. They both seem so /trusting/... and looking at Red right now, I can't help but feel a twinge of guilt at the way I'd yelled at her. She'd just been through something pretty terrifying for a kid her age, after all. But she shouldn't have gone out in the first place.*
